Wills, trusts, and estate planning documents for Arizona and New Mexico families. Call Kanu & Associates at (602) 324-5320 to get started.

Planning That Fits Your Family, Not a Template

Most people put off writing a will because it feels like paperwork about death. In practice, it's paperwork about the people you leave behind — who looks after your kids, who handles the house, who makes a medical call if you can't. Getting it on paper is usually far less work than clients expect, and the relief afterward is real.

At Kanu & Associates, P.C.estate planning is one of our core practice areas alongside immigration, criminal defense, and business law. We help clients across Arizona and New Mexico prepare practical estate planning documents designed around their family, their property, their health care wishes, and the legacy they want to leave. There's no single correct plan. A young couple with a first home and a toddler needs something different from a retired business owner with rental property in two states.

Dr. Solomon Kanu brings more than two decades of legal experience to this work. He was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Arizona in 2001, the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona in 2001, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 2002, and is a member of the State Bar of New Mexico. He earned his Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1999, following graduate work in banking and business finance — a background that comes in handy when a plan involves business interests, accounts, and real property rather than just a list of belongings.

What We Prepare

We take time to understand your goals, explain your options in plain language, and then draft documents that actually say what you want them to say. Depending on your situation, that may include:

  • Last wills and testaments — naming who inherits what, and who you trust to carry it out
  • Trusts — for clients who want more control over timing, privacy, or how assets pass to beneficiaries
  • Powers of attorney — so someone you choose can handle financial and legal matters if you cannot
  • Health care directives — putting your medical wishes in writing before anyone has to guess
  • Guardianship designations for minor children
  • Planning around real property — residential and commercial
  • Coordination with business documents for owners whose company is part of the estate

If your plan touches a business, we can address the entity side of it too, business formation, contracts, and compliance are work we already do. If a family member's immigration status affects how you want to structure things, that's a conversation we're well equipped to have — immigration law has been central to this firm for years.

How the Process Works

Nothing about this needs to be mysterious. Here's the usual shape of it:

  1. Call us at (602) 324-5320 and tell us roughly what you're dealing with — family, property, any worries you already have.
  2. Sit down with us to go through your assets, your people, and your priorities. Bring deeds, account summaries, and prior documents if you have them.
  3. We recommend an approach and explain the trade-offs between a will, a trust, or a combination.
  4. We draft your documents and walk you through every provision before you sign anything.
  5. We handle signing and witnessing formalities properly, and tell you plainly what to keep, what to share, and when to come back for an update.

Plans should be revisited after a marriage, divorce, birth, death, property purchase, or move between states. We'd rather you call us with a question than let a document go stale.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a will or a trust?

It depends on what you own, where it's located, and how much control you want over how and when assets pass to your beneficiaries. We'll walk you through the difference and recommend what fits your situation — many clients end up with a will plus supporting documents like a power of attorney and a health care directive.

What should I bring to the first meeting?

Anything you already have: deeds for residential or commercial property, account summaries, business formation documents, and any prior will or trust. A list of the people you'd want named as beneficiaries, executor, or guardian is also helpful. If you don't have all of it, come anyway and we'll work from there.

Can you help if I own property in both Arizona and New Mexico?

Yes. We practice in Arizona and New Mexico, and Dr. Kanu is admitted in Arizona and is a member of the State Bar of New Mexico, so a plan involving property in both states can be handled by one firm.

I own a business. Can that be part of my estate plan?

It should be. Business law is one of our practice areas, so we can look at your entity structure, contracts, and succession alongside your will or trust rather than treating them as separate problems.

How often should I update my documents?

Revisit them after any significant change — marriage, divorce, a birth, a death in the family, buying or selling property, or moving to another state. If you're unsure whether something counts, call us and ask.

Are you open on weekends?

No, our office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm. You can call (602) 324-5320 or email solomon@kanulaw.com any time and we'll get back to you during business hours.
