Most people who call us have been putting it off. The immigration notice has been sitting on the kitchen counter for two weeks. The court date is circled on the calendar. The will never got written. If that sounds familiar, you're in good company — and the first step is smaller than you think.
Kanu & Associates, P.C. provides practical, client-focused legal representation in immigration law, criminal defense, estate planning, and business law throughout Arizona and New Mexico. This page walks you through what actually happens from the moment you pick up the phone, so there are no surprises.
What Happens When You Call
Call (602) 324-5320 during office hours — Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm. We're closed weekends. If you'd rather write first, email solomon@kanulaw.com and tell us briefly what's going on.
The first conversation is about understanding your situation, not selling you something. We'll ask what happened, what deadlines you're facing, and what you're hoping to end up with. Then we tell you honestly whether this is something we handle and what the realistic options look like.
- Tell us the short version — what happened and when
- Mention any deadline, hearing date, or notice you've received
- We'll explain which area of law your matter falls under
- We'll schedule a consultation if it makes sense to go further
- If it's not something we handle, we'll say so plainly
If you have a hearing date, a filing deadline, or someone in custody, say that at the start of the call. Timing changes what we can do.
What to Bring to Your First Meeting
You don't need to have everything organized. Bring what you have — gaps are normal and we'll work out what's missing together. That said, the more paperwork you bring, the more specific our advice can be on day one.
- Immigration matters: passports, visas, any USCIS or EOIR notices, prior filings, and anything mailed to you with a case number
- Criminal defense: citation, charging documents, bond paperwork, and your next court date
- Estate planning: a rough list of property, accounts, and who you want to inherit what — residential and commercial property both count
- Business law: formation documents, contracts in question, and any correspondence about compliance or employees
- Traffic and family law: the citation or filed paperwork, plus any orders already in place
Write down your questions beforehand. People forget them in the room, then remember on the drive home.
Which Area of Law Fits Your Situation
If you're not sure which door you're supposed to walk through, that's fine — it's a common question and we sort it out on the call. Here's the broad shape of what we handle:
- Immigration Law — filings before USCIS, immigration court matters before EOIR, consular work, asylum, E-1 visas, investment visas, and removal defense and deportation
- Criminal Defense — representation in Arizona criminal matters
- Estate Planning — practical documents built around your family, property, health care, and legacy goals
- Business Law — forming companies properly, managing contracts, maintaining compliance, and employer immigration needs
- Family Law and Traffic Law

After the First Meeting
We take time to understand your goals, explain your options, and help you move forward with confidence. That means after the consultation you should know three things: what your choices are, what we'd recommend, and what the next concrete step is. If you leave confused, we didn't do our job.
From there, you decide. Some people engage us the same day because a deadline demands it. Others go home and think about it, which is entirely reasonable. We'll tell you if waiting carries a real cost.
